Saint-Maurice's origins date back to the first centuries of the Common Era. The martyrdom of the legionary Maurice and his companions, at the end of the third century CE, brought the ancient village of Acaunus to the attention of the Christian world. Its influence was confirmed by the founding of the Abbey in 515.
